The Ontario government is yielding to complaints from gasoline and diesel fuel suppliers and will allow them more time to comply with mandated biofuel standards announced in August.
The proposal is to allow them to combine volumes from this year and next to comply with the new standards that require 75 per cent of the ethanol in gasoline to be sourced from Canadian suppliers. The mandate for diesel is 64 per cent domestic supply.
The industry has been importing biofuels from the United States.
The government mandates a minimum of 11 per cent ethanol in regular grade gasoline and four per cent for diesel.
That increases to 13 per cent in 2028 and 15 per cent in 2030 for gasoline.
