Neilson takes organic milk business

Neilson Dairy, owned by Saputo Inc., has entered the organic milk market and has taken the Loblaws’ account from Organic Meadow.

Loblaws’ and Neilson were sister companies in the Weston Group empire until Saputo bought the dairy in 2008.

Loblaws had owned Neilson since 1948.

Organic Meadow built its clientele from scratch, starting with 30 organic growers near Dundalk in 1989 and with OntarBio Organic Farmers’ Co-operative Inc.

In 1995, organic dairy farmers – most notably Ineke Booy and Martin de Groot – joined and the business took a major step forward.

Booy and de Groot later left to run their business as Mapleton Dairy.
