CFIA invites comments re. diseases zoning policy

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is inviting public comment on a proposed deal with the United States over accepting each other’s standards for a broad range of issues, including zoning in the event of an outbreak of a foreign animal disease.

The Canadian government and livestock industries have invested a lot of time, effort and money into setting up a protocol to divide Canada in half in case of an outbreak of a foreign animal disease.

The aim is to retain export markets for the half of the country – either east or west of Lake Superior – while the disease is brought under control and eradicated.

The proposed deal and instructions on filing a comment are posted on the CFIA website at http://www.inspection.gc.ca/eng/1402434778625/1402434779735 .
