Another Lambton farm has PED

A second farrow-to-finish hog farm in Lambton County has been hit with an outbreak of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus.

The other one was reported July 2 by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. This one was confirmed July 14.

A farrow-to-finish farm in Oxford County was hit July 8.

The three outbreaks are surprising, given that the virus is usually too weak to survive hot summer weather. It thrives in cool conditions which is why it is more likely to spread during the winter.

The news comes just as the Veterinary Infectious Diseases Organization in Saskatoon has announced it is ready to begin field trials of a promising PED vaccine.

Unlike vaccines developed in the United States, this one appears to be robust against a number of different strains of PED and to be effective as a preventive measure.

Sows that are vaccinated pass immunity to their offspring.
