Ag minister may come from Atlantic Canada

The Liberals have two strong candidates from Atlantic Canada to become the new federal agriculture minister.

Wayne Easter is a former agriculture minister.

Mark Eyking served as agriculture critic before this election.

Eyking’s parents immigrated from The Netherlands in 1959. That’s a familiar story in rural Ontario where immigrants from The Netherlands are now the single most significant group of farmers.

Easter became agriculture minister, taking over from Eugene Whelan when John Turner became leader of the Liberal Party.
