Feds tout safer food

The federal health and agriculture ministers are boasting this week that Canadian food will be safer because regulations have been updated and consolidated.

It’s hogwash.

Regulations don’t make food safer.

People do, especially the way they design systems, equipment and processes involved in getting food to stores, restaurants and cafeterias.

As for regulations, they are only as good as compliance and that, in turn, depends on scrutiny and enforcement.

That, sadly, is too often lacking among the ranks of government inspectors and company employees.

People are still being sickened, by the thousands a year, by the food they buy.
