Cargill is investing $100 million US to expand its wheat
milling at Efremov in the Tula region of Russia.
The plant which opened in 1995 employs 800 people processing
500,000 tonnes of wheat a year.
They make starches and sweeteners from corn, barley, wheat
and other grains for use in soft drinks, beer, confectionery and flour.
Starch is shipped to the paper and corrugated cardboard
industries.
“This project is a reflection of our commitment to the Tula
region and to Russia,” Natalia Orlova, head of Cargill’s food business in
Russia, said in a statement.
Cargill opened its Russian office in Moscow in 1991.
The company made no mention of increased tensions over the
Ukraine and the U.S. government’s moves to inflict some economic pain on Russia
as diplomatic pressure to back off its aggression in Crimea and Eastern
Ukraine.
