The British Columbia milk marketing board has resumed milk
pickups at Chilliwack Cattle Sales Ltd.
First Saputo Inc., then many other British Columbia dairies,
refused to take milk from the farm after cattle abuse by eight employees was
caught on underground video released to news media earlier this month.
The B.C. milk board stopped picking up milk when it had no
takers for production on the farm, which is Canada’s largest dairy farm.
Over the weekend, the B.C. Dairy
Association says milk pickups have resumed and said the farm has taken action,
installing cameras to provide 24-hour surveillance.
Jeff Kooyman, head of the family that
owns the farm, said earlier that
they have “zero tolerance” for animal abuse, that they immediately fired the
eight workers and that they have asked the B.C. Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Animals to help train their staff.
