Farm Credit Canada has thrown Great Lakes Specialty Meats of
Mitchell into bankruptcy.
Dave Schwartz is the principal and his Quality Meats Ltd.
and Toronto Abattoirs went into bankruptcy earlier.
He kept Great Lakes going until June 2 when all of the staff
was laid off.
So far Farm Credit Canada has said nothing and has not
revealed how much it is owed.
It’s the third time the facility in Mitchell has been in
bankruptcy.
It was started by Marion and Joe Terpstra before their huge
hog-farming enterprise went bankrupt.
Schwartz increased the plant capacity to 5,000 hogs per
week.
For a time it was owned by Sunterra Farms of Alberta which
tried to operate it for specialty and niche markets and as a custom-slaughter
facility for hog farmers who wanted to capture downstream revenues.
