Dumping skim milk is dumb

Dairy Farmers of Ontario admits that there is so much skim milk in the system that some is being dumped into manure pits.

Graham Lloyd, lawyer and spokesman for the board, made the admission to Susan Mann of Better Farming.

Yet when I went shopping with my wife last week, I saw a small package of skim milk powder on the shelf of a discount supermarket chain. It was more than $6.

It’s far cheaper to buy fresh liquid milk!

Given that Gay Lea is one of the major skim milk powder processors in the province, and that it’s owned by dairy farmers, this is a travesty.

Add to that the fact that supply management prices milk out of the reach of many poor Ontario families.

Lots of skim milk powder gets dumped into the livestock feed market where it's priced at a fraction of the cost of fresh milk. And even a small fraction of the price of that skim milk I spotted on the supermarket shelf.

It is disgusting that skim milk is being dumped. Absolutely disgusting.

But that's what tends to happen in a market that's run by bureaucrats instead of in response to public needs and desires.
