Ontario hog farmers are experiencing a high degree of
success ridding their herds of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus.
Lori Moser of the Ontario Pork Industry Council
reports that 122 sites have enrolled in the PED control and eradication
protocols.
According to the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food
and Rural Affairs data, there have been 81 primary cases (i.e. outbreaks) of
PED in Ontario.
Fifty of these primary cases are enrolled in the Area
Regional Control and Eradiation (ARC&E) protocols, equivalent to 63 per
cent of the outbreaks.
Twelve new PED primary cases have been listed on the OMAFRA
website since Jan. 1.
Seventy-two per cent of all
sites enrolled in the ARC&E to date have eliminated PED, reports Moser.
“When cases which broke six months or more ago are
considered, 85 per cent of PED positive sites enrolled in the ARC&E have
eliminated PED and returned to presumed negative status,” she writes.
