An infestation of Asian longhorn beetles has already
destroyed about 20,000 trees in New York and has officials in Chicago and
Cincinnati worried about some spottings there.
It is highly destructive and could wipe out woodlots,
including maples.
It was spotted once in Waterloo and in Toronto and in both
cases firm action by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency wiped the beetles out.
The outbreaks here were traced to wooden pallets used to
deliver merchandise from China.
So far the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has posted
nothing about the New York outbreak on its website.
