First it was sow gestation crates, then laying-hen cages and
now the Humane Society of the United States is going after the broiler chicken
industry.
It has called for meetings with all of the major growers and
processors to copy a deal HSUS reached with Purdue Farms.
It includes commitments to convert all its slaughterhouses to Controlled
Atmosphere Stunning (CAS); to start installing windows to provide birds natural
light and adding enrichments; testing slower-growing birds, and providing more
space per bird.
HSUS pushed the hog industry to move sows out of gestation crates by pressuring retailers
to set deadlines beyond which they want their pork to come from farms that don’t
use the crates.
It did the same
for caged hens.
What started in
the United States then migrated to Canada.
