The
European Union will halt imports of Canadian apples, pears, cranberries,
blueberries, peppers, cherries and potatoes and tomatoes because of new pest
regulations.
That
undermines the new free trade agreement between Canada and Europe.
The
Canadian Food Inspection Agency has sent a letter to the industry outlining the
changes, but said it’s “w.orking with industry to propose pest risk mitigation
measures to the EU for these commodities, which may allow exports to resume.”
The
CFIA said shipments in containers before Sept. 1 are going to be allowed into
Europe.
