Funding announced for stranded migrant workers

The federal and provincial governments are tapping a special fund to help farmers look after about 400 temporary foreign workers from Trinidad and Tobago who are unable to return home.

Their home countries are denying them permission to return because of concerns that they might bring COVID-19 to the islands.

Farm employers can contact the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs to access funding.

Eligible expenses would include accommodations, meals, winter clothing, heaters, equipment, personal protective equipment (PPE), cleaning supplies, communications, and transportation costs.

Following the extension of their immigration statuses by the federal government, Ontario has also extended Ontario Hospital Insurance Program (OHIP) coverage to assist these workers.

The federal government is in discussions with Trinidad and Tobago.
