JBS buys plant-based protein giant

Brazil's JBS is paying about $515 million Cdn to buy Vivera, Europe’s third-largest producer of plant-based protein products.

The deal includes three production facilities and a research and development center located in the Netherlands.

Vivera sells under its own name and supplies private-label products to customers in more than 25 countries.

It has significant market share in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Germany.

JBS is the largest meat-packing company in the world. In Canada it owns the former XL beef-packing plant in Alberta which it bought when the company was hard hit by a large recall because of E. Coli 0157:H7. It is the second-largest beef-packing plant west of Ontario.
