Prions ruled out in mystery deaths

A sixth death has occurred in New Brunswick where a mystery disease has now infected 44 people.

Tests for Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease done on the patients have so far ruled out known prion diseases, such as Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE or mad cow’s disease) and Chronic Wasting Disease of cervids such as deer and elk.

Researchers are looking into the possibility that this is an entirely new disease, possibly caused by some sort of environmental toxin.
