Plant-based food sales increasing

Meat substitutes made of plant materials are gaining ground, according to the most recent survey results from Nielsen, which tracks retail sales.

Sales increased by 8.1 percent since last year and topped $3.1 billion in the United States.

The results also showed plant-based “meats” growing at 6 percent from a year ago.

Refrigerated meat substitutes are growing more than frozen foods.

This explains why Maple Leaf Foods recently bought an American company that makes plant-based meat substitutes.
