OMAFRA sets up worker internet site

The government has set up an internet site where workers and employers can connect for jobs in the food industry.

It’s at Ontario.ca/AgFoodJobs.

“This new online tool will make it easier to match people to essential jobs and training resources throughout the provincial food supply chain,” the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said in a news release Saturday.

“Right now, there are important jobs that need to be filled across the food supply chain and we are looking for individuals who embody the Ontario spirit to step up and provide an essential services," said Ontario Agriculture Minister Ernie Hardeman.

The new service “provides access to information on job opportunities and training resources in all parts of Ontario’s food supply chain – from grocery retailers to bakeries and cheese processing plants to opportunities on farms,” the government said.

So why did it require a COVID-19 pandemic crisis to move the government to provide this service? Would we have needed these thousands of temporary foreign workers had they done this years ago?

Ah, but it's so nice for employers to have foreign workers housed right on the farm where they can work from sunup to sundown without needing transportation to and from the job.

And unil new provisions kicked in this year, they couldn't  get up and leave for another job; their only option was to go back home. And even now, they will find it difficult to navigate the system to work elsewhere.
