Fertilizer costs are soaring

Fertilizer prices have shot up by 80 per cent for grain farmers in Texas, according to a report by Texas A&M University which was requested by a politician.

House of Representatives member Julia Letlow, a Republican from Louisiana, requested the report after hearing from farmers in her consitutuency.

When the same analysts pondered the price outlook in August, they figured on a 10 per cent increase for the 2022 crop year.

But now it’s up by 80 per cent, led by nitrogen. The increases amount to a cost increase of more than $62 an acre, the report said.

It blamed disruptions in supply chains for the increases, some of them due to COVID-19, others to storms.
