Tribunal fails to post hearing

The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs usually posts pre-hearing meetings for appeals, but has not do so for four appeals filed by Sweda Farms Ltd. against the Egg Farmers of Ontario marketing board.

Ontario Farmer has learned that a pre-hearing was held on Jan. 10 to determine whether the appeals can proceed, to consider consolidating them so one after the other can be heard at the same time and to set deadlines for the marketing board and the Ontario Farm Products Marketing Commission to file documents.

Ontario Farmer’s reporter e-mailed the commission in December specifically asking about any hearings on the Sweda appeals. The tribunal has not answered, either through negligence or deliberate inaction.

The tribunal has included the commission as a participant in the appeals, probably because some of the issues fall under the commission’s responsibility to supervise the egg board.
