U.S. beef herd shrinks again

Drought is being blamed for another decline in the national beef herd in the United States, now at its lowest level since 1962, according to a count done by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Market analysts say it means beef prices will remain high for at least the next three years.

Because ranchers and farmers culled herds heavily last year, there were so many cattle moving to packing plants that there was a shortage of workers, especially in the western half of the United States.

What happens in the United States beef market sets the stage for not only Canadian beef producers and packers, but also for alternative meats such as pork, chicken and turkey.
