Ontario’s
swine industry leaders are forming Swine Health Ontario to build on the recent success
in tackling the formidable challenge of preventing the spread of Porcine
Epidemic Diarrhea Virus.
A
seven-member team is chaired by Dr. David Alves, former provincial veterinarian
and deputy chief veterinarian for Ontario. Lori Moser will be the manager,
transitioning from managing director of the Ontario Pork Industry Council.
The
organizers say they want to continue the collaborative effort that evolved
during the PED crisis and improve swine health for the future.
“Ontario
has many pieces in place that are working well,” says Amy Cronin, chair of the Ontario
Pork marketing board.
“The
intent for Swine Health Ontario is to build on these strengths and provide
improved coordination, communication and a long term strategy for swine health
management”.
Jay
Squire, vice-chairman of the Ontario Pork Industry Council, said “collaboration
is a key value of the leadership team. We all need to be pulling in the same
direction toward a proactive long-term strategy for swine health.”
Next on
the agenda is developing key priorities and a work plan.
