Barn fires leave animal disposal challenge

Barn fires so far this year have left 300 tonnes of dead animal remains that required disposal.

That’s more than the year-long total of 225 tonnes during 2015 and more than any year since 2012.

The toll includes 40 racehorses that died in a January fire near Cambridge, 2,000 hogs that died in a fire north of London and 90 dairy cattle that died in a fire in Elgin County.

"Right now, we're not taking these barn fires seriously at all as a society," said Anna Pippus, an animal rights lawyer who works with Animal Justice. "Everyone with a responsibility for these barn fires needs to get serious and come up with a concerted response."
