Phil Whiting of Mirexus Boptechnologies Ltd. told the annual meeting of Ontario Agri-Food Technologies how the
company is exploiting a nanotechnology discovery by a University of Guelph
professor who found that phytoglycogen nanoparticles can be extracted from
sweet corn.
That means they are a healthy, digestible, natural product.
His company has used them to make a skin cream and intends
to soon be marketing them to drug companies who will use them to fight cancers
from inside cancer cells.
Another market under development is as an ingredient in
processed foods, serving as a natural food-colouring stabilizer and to deliver
flavours and vitamins. He said a sporta nutrition product will be coming soon.
