Sunwest Food fined $68,750

Sunwest Food Processors, which operates as DC Foods of Waterloo, has been fined a total of $68,750 for an injury a worker suffered last June 1.

The employee was forming patties from frozen meat and stuck his hand into a hopper to push down meat when he was cut by whirling blades.

DC Foods produces a wide range of batter and breaded products on a range of protein, cheeses, seafood and vegetable substrates.

The company has since hired a dedicated health and safety officer and has given employees additional safety training.

The $68,500 includes a 25 per cent victim surcharge.

Sunwest Food Processors Ltd. began in British Columbia in 1983 and operates hatcheries, chicken farms, primary chicken and other meat processing and further processing facilities.

DC Foods fits into the end of this chain, operating out of a 50,000-square-foot facility to produce various chicken, cheese, seafood and vegetable ready to eat/heat products.
