Brazil’s meat packers are facing new corruption charges this week with police claiming more than $26 million US in bribes was paid to three senators and three representatives.
One of them was AĆ©cio Neves, a candidate in the 2014 elections for president.
The new charges arise out of investigations related to the Batista brothers and JBS, the largest meat-packing company in the world and owner of XL Foods near Calgary.
The police said the new probe is a development of Operation Patmos, triggered in May 2017 after JBS's controllers Joesley and Wesley Batista revealed information on the payment of bribes to almost 2,000 Brazilian politicians in a plea bargain deal.
