Canadian beef faces new U.S. restrictions

Federal politicians are preparing legislation that would stop the United States beef industry from processing Canadian-born cattle and labeling the beef as Product of USA.

According to a release from co-sponsor Mike Rounds, a Republican from South Dakota,(R-S.D.), only beef from cattle born, raised and slaughtered in the U.S. will qualify for Product of USA.

“Consumers deserve to know where their beef comes from and accurate, transparent labeling supports American farmers and ranchers,” Round said. “It’s long past time we fix this once and for all.”

Along with Rounds, the bill’s co-sponsors are John Barrasso , a Republican Senator from Wyoming, Cory Booker, a Democrat from New Jersey, Bill Hagerty, a Repbulican from Texas, John Thune, a Republican from South Dakota, Cindy Hyde-Smith, a Republican from Mississippi, Cynthia Lummis, a Republican from Wyoming, and Steve Daines, a Republican from Montana.

House of Representatives member Matt Rosendale, a Republican from Montana, is introducing companion legislation.

What are the chances of Canadian politicians instituting similar labeling restrictions? Not that it would make a bit of difference to the qualify of beef on offer to Canadians.
