Grain Farmers wants minor regulation changes

Grain Farmers of Ontario has asked the Ontario Farm Products Marketing Commission to change two regulations.

It wants to remove restrictions on the use of the Wheat Price Risk Mitigation Fund, but in keeping with its government mandate.

There is about $14 million in the fund that was established when the wheat marketing board was marketing members’ wheat.

Grain Farmers of Ontario ended its involvement in marketing wheat at the end of the 2020 crop year this May, so there is no longer a need to backstop any risk involved in marketing wheat.

General manager Crosby Devitt said the directors and members will be consulted about using the funds for other purposes.

Grain Farmers of Ontario also wants the government to remove the requirement to review its district structure every five years.

The commission has not yet made a decision on the requests.
