Avian flu in Nfld spread to wild birds

Avian influenza first detected in a bird sanctuary in Newfoundland has spread to wild birds, reports the OIE, the world organization for animal health.

More than 360 of the 416 birds affected in the first outbreak died from the virus, according to OIE.

The CBC reported that the H5N1 strain of avian influenza may have come with geese imported from Europe.

Avian influenza outbreaks in France and Belgium have led to culling of tens of thousands of birds at poultry farms.

France has culled about 650,000 chickens, ducks and geese and Belgium has euthanized 39,000 chickens.

Twenty-six farms in Southwestern France had to sacrifice all their birds.
