Waterloo hog finishing barn has PED

A hog finishing barn in the Waterloo Region has fallen victim to the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus.

It’s the fourth case in Ontario this fall and the 68th since the virus first showed up in January at a farm in Middlesex County.

As usual, the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs provided no more details on its website about the most recent outbreak.

Hog farmers have been advised to be on high alert and to practice enhanced biosecurity during the colder months of the year because the virus can survive longer in colder conditions.

The virus is deadly for newborn piglets, but usually causes only brief and typical flu symptoms in older pigs.
