Avian flu prompts trade bans

Several countries have imposed trading bans on poultry following confirmation of the H5N8 strain of avian influenza in Germany, Hungary, India, Israel and Switzerland.

The disease was found in wild birds in Germany and Switzerland, in the general environment in India, and in commercial poultry flocks in Hungary and Israel.

Hong Kong has banned poultry from Germany and Hungary whence it imported 10,000 tonnes by the end of September this year.

Ukraine has banned poultry from Hungary and Bulgaria.


Bulgaria has had an outbreak of Newcastle disease.
