China closing small, outdated pork plants

China’s agriculture ministry said this week it will be closing some of the country’s small-scale slaughterhouses in another effort to halt the spread of African Swine Fever.

As the announcement was being made, another outbreak was reported from the southern province of Yunnan.

The government said on its website that there are too many small slaughterhouses in some places in China, equipped with old facilities and backward production techniques. Because of this, checks on pork quality are often not done properly, the government said.
