Maple Leaf’s London plant behind schedule

Poor spring weather has put construction of Maple Leaf Foods’ poultry plant in London behind schedule, president and chief executive officer Michael McCain said in a discussion with market analysts this week.

The 640,000-square-foot facility is intended to consolidate the production capacity from three of the company's other facilities in St. Mary's, Toronto and Brampton.

Work on design plans has also set back construction of a huge plant-based protein plant at Shelbyville, Indiana, he said.

As a result,  the company has reduced capital-spending estimates for this year from $480 to $300 million.
