Two Middlesex barns have PED

Two barns in Middlesex County have come down with Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus.

One is a sow barn, the other a grow-finish facility, according to the Ontario Pork marketing board website.

There is no further information about these outbreaks on the website – eg. If they are under common ownership and perhaps on the same property.

The continuation of outbreaks brings into question the Ontario pork industry’s ability to control outbreaks of more serious contagious diseases, such as foot and mouth disease or Afrian Swine Fever.

However, with those diseases, federal officials have the power and right to step in with bans on movement on and off the infected farms and to impose large-zone quarantines.
