Troubled CAMI plant sold

The CAMI chicken-slaughtering plant at Welland has been sold to ADP Direct Poultry of Toronto.

The plant was under Canadian Food Inspection Agency suspension from Jan. 10 to July 1 for failure to meet food safety standards.

“I’ve believed for years that vertical integration was critical to the company’s long-term aspirations,” said ADP’s chief executive officer Augo Pinho.

He began ADP Direct Poultry in 2005 and added Premium Foods in 2013.

Premium Foods in 2013, said in a release.

Cami has both Canadian Food Inspection Agency and U.S. Department of Agriculture certification, ADP said, and its plant produces a premium “air-chilled” poultry line.

It also does Halal slaughter.

ADP’s plants do further processing, including deli department products, and also serves Halal and organic markets.
