Stranded foreign workers cleared to go home

Trinidad and Tobago have agreed to allow about 400 temporary foreign workers in Canada to return home.

But some say they plan to stay in Canada because there is high unemployment on the islands, they might have trouble getting back to Canada for the upcoming season and it’s not worth the hassle for a short stay at home.

They were stranded here when Trinidad and Tobago closed their borders to international travellers to keep out COVID-19.

There were some outbreaks of the virus among temporary foreign workers on Ontario farms last year.

One small group of workers returned Dec. 28 and Trinidad and Tobago said they have scheduled more flights at 10-day intervals.
