Mudslides wipe out B.C. rail lines

Mudslides triggered by heavy rains have wiped out CN and CP rail lines in British Columbia, disrupting supply chain lines for both exports and imports.

Many highways are also closed and in some communities grocery store shelves are empty.

There is also an urgent flood warning for a community east of Vancouver that once was a lake but now has poultry and livestock farms and subdivisions.

The mayor has issued an urgent evacuation order and has told farmers their lives are more important than their chickens and livestock.

The former lake area has four large pumps operating to keep water levels manageable, but there are concerns that the pumps may fail.

Grain and oilseed exports from the Prairies will grind to a halt until the rail lines can be repaired. Truck traffic is likely to be restored before rail lines.
