NFU disses feds over farm workers

The National Farmers Union chose May 1, International Farm Workers Day, to point out that Canada has not signed the United Nations’ Declaration on the Rights of Peasants and Other People Working in Rural Areas.

This May Day, the NFU said it is calling on the federal government to implement the United Nations’ declaration “to ensure all resident and migrant agricultural workers are afforded the right to safe and healthy working and living conditions, and the right to unionization.”

It repeated its call for open work permits and permanent residency status for all.

Open work permits would enable temporary foreign workers to take employment with a farmer other than the one that signed to bring them to Canada.
