World food prices rise

World food prices rose for the first time in more than a year, reports the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.

Meat prices rose the most.

The index is still 20 per cent below the record high last March in the wake of Russia’s invasion of the Ukraine.

DaIry, vegetable oils and cereals prices were all lower, but those declines were more than offset by increases for sugar, rice and meat.

FAO chief economist Maximo Torero said that as economies recover, demand for food will increase, putting upward pressure on prices.
