Authorities in South Korea have culled
8.8 million birds so far and another 1.5 million will likely be euthanized to stem
an outbreak of avian influenza.
France has culled more than 50,000
birds, the Netherlands 63,000 broilers from one farm.
Heightened biosecurity measures and
quarantine zones are in place in those three countries.
Although the United Kingdom hasn’t had
any outbreaks, authorities are warning that stern measures will apply, up to
and including jail time, if anyone breaks regulations.
One regulation already in place require
all poultry, including captive and pet birds, to be kept completely separated
from wild birds until at least Jan. 6.
