ConAgra paid far more than the $11.2 million cited in court
documents to settle a criminal case this week over food poisoning related to
its Peter Pan peanut butter.
The judge noted that others had already
received cash from ConAgra in civil settlements, which he said totaled $36
million to 6,810 people.
The $11.2 million to judge assessed includes
the largest ever fine in a food-safety case - $8 million.
All the figures are in U.S. dollars, so in
Canadian currency they’re about 25 per cent more.
