R-Calf has persuaded a Montana judge to prevent the state
beef agency from collecting checkoff funds that are passed on to a national
organization to promote beef.
R-Calf argued that the national promotion program does not
distinguish between American and imported beef, so their money is being used to
subsidize competitors.
R-Calf has been a thorn in the Canadian beef industry’s
side, launching countervailing duties that cost the Canadian industry millions
of dollars in lost marketing to U.S. packers and to pay lawyers and consultants
to eventually win court battles against the duties.
R-Calf also lobbied long and hard for Country-of-Origin
Labeling, another measure that cost Canadians billions of dollars before a
final ruling from the World Trade Organization that mandatory COOL is illegal.
