There will
be an election this fall for four directors to a revamped marketing board for
processing vegetable producers.
The board
is currently under management by former agriculture minister Elmer Buchanan who
is also vice-chairman of the Ontario Farm Products Marketing Board.
Complaints
from processors and a number of bankruptcies and the Heinz company leaving
Leamington prompted the government to act.
Now
Agriculture Minister Jeff Leal says he will appoint four directors to serve
with Buchanan until the elections this fall.
The
government will continue to appoint the chairman of the board.
The terms
for the four elected directors will be staggered and there will be a limit on
how many consecutive terms a director may serve.
The
proposed changes to the marketing board’s regulations will be posted for a
45-day comment period.
