Wine labels under review

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is calling for public comment on a proposal to change the labeling for wines that are a blend of domestic and imported wines.

Instead of “cellared in Canada,” the CFIA is proposing labels that say either that they are blends, either primarily of Canadian or primarily of imported wines.

The survey is open until the end of June.

In Ontario, the wine industry has adopted its own labeling standard, VQA (Vintners Quality Assurance) that can only be applied to wines made entirely from Ontario-grown grapes.
