Olymel strike talks to resume July 19

Union and company officials at Olymel’s hog-slaughtering plant in Quebec failed to reach agreement in recent negotiations, but have agreed to try again July 19.

About 1,000 members of The Syndicat des travailleurs at the VallĂ©e-Jonction plant have been on strike since late April.

That has made a shortage of shackles even worse for Ontario’s hog farmers who are now competing with Olymel’s Quebec suppliers for space at U.S. packing plants.

And there the hog industry is facing a crisis because a judge has forced the packers to abandon higher line speeds. The pork packers are trying to regain permission for higher line speeds via court appeals and political lobbying.
