About 1,000 members of The Syndicat des travailleurs at the Vallée-Jonction plant have been on strike since late April.
That has made a shortage of shackles even worse for Ontario’s hog farmers who are now competing with Olymel’s Quebec suppliers for space at U.S. packing plants.
And there the hog industry is facing a crisis because a judge has forced the packers to abandon higher line speeds. The pork packers are trying to regain permission for higher line speeds via court appeals and political lobbying.
