Feds crack down on truck drivers

The federal government’s budget includes measures to crack down on truck drivers who are declaring themselves to be independent contractors instead of paid employees.

The government intends to use two departments to enforce its rules - the Canada Revenue Agency and Employment and Social Development Canada - and the Canadian Trucking Alliance and its provincial association members.

The budget includes $77 million for the next four years to enforce the Income Tax Act and the Excise Tax Act in the crackdown.
