Farmers aren’t pot growers

Farmers are on the sidelines as marijuana, the hottest cash crop in Canada, takes off.

It’s already a mega-billion-dollar market and it’s dominated by corporate farms.

This week CanniMed struck an agreement to be acquired by Aurora Cannabis Inc. for $1.2-billion.

Newstrike, another big cannabis-growing company, had also tried to buy CanniMed.

And this week, Statistics Canada said marijuana exports garner more than $1 billion a year in revenue, and that’s only the beginning.

It won’t be until summer that marketing marijuana for other than medicinal purposes will be legal in Canada.

However, there have been estimates that illegal production in British Columbia has made marijuana the most valuable crop grown in the province.
