The federal government has served notice on its website that it intends to change vodka regulations to increase the potential for inter-provincial trade and exports.
Under current standards, vodka is defined as "a potable alcoholic beverage obtained by the treatment of grain spirit or potato spirit with charcoal so as to render the product without distinctive character, aroma or taste."
The CFIA said “there is interest in allowing the use of the term "vodka" when it is produced from other agricultural material, such as fruit, dairy products, or honey.”
The changes will also increase competition from imports.
Vodka made inside a province and not moved over provincial borders does not need to meet the CFIA standards.
