Province offers $12.2 million to 42 meat packers

Ontario Agriculture Minister Ernie Hardeman has announced he’s offering $12.2 million to 42 provincially-inspected meat packers to help them cope with COVID-19 protocols.

The money is to help employees maintain safe distancing and to have protective equipment and to help employers increase their slaughter capacity.

They can also use the money to upgrade their plants and buy new equipment.

Beef Farmers of Ontario immediately welcomed the news.

“On behalf of the province’s beef farmers, we are grateful for the federal government’s support for Ontario’s processing sector, which is an integral component of the beef supply chain and Ontario’s food system,” said president Rob Lipsett of Beef Farmers of Ontario.

“Ensuring plant workers can continue to work safely throughout the pandemic remains our priority and this funding will help ensure this.”
